Material World

Watercolor on Paper, 11” x 14”, 2021

I recently read an article about Madonna. Her sense of confidence, intolerance of toxicity and appreciation for glamorous beauty inspired the metallic-opalescent glow of Material World. I was filled with glee as I painted along to the vibes of late 70s Grateful Dead and 80s Pop. Memories of Maryland summers at the beach flashed in my mind, resulting in some bright aqua, neon pinks and bold purples. In opposition to the wild color palette, the sophistication of deep blues and gold strokes across the larger blooms seemingly represent a more elegant experience. Like the original Material Girl herself, Material World is a timeless example of living in the present, with gratitude from the past and hope for the future.
