Poppy's Girl

Watercolor on Paper, 14” x 11”, 2021

Poppy’s Girl is a tribute to my maternal grandfather, Herbert, who we affectionately called Poppy. His love for my siblings and I was so unconditional, it surpasses death. My Poppy was born June 1st, the same date as the finalization of this painting. Leading up to Poppy’s Girl, I had been subconsciously reminiscing about our relationship. I even recalled events to my immediate family, as I felt compelled to talk about him. I actually didn’t find out his birthday till my mother told me on June 1, 2021. This event also coincided with Memorial Day Weekend. The coincidences do not escape me. For all those who remember our loved ones who have passed, I hope this painting reinstates the testament that our loved ones never leave us, and that we are never truly alone.
